Le coeur perdu – Paris

Here Is Why LVP Flooring Is Taking Over in Canadian Homes

Its first role is acoustic insulation. Laminate and click vinyl can sound loud without proper underlayment. The right underlay absorbs footstep noise, something that is especially important in condos where condo boards frequently require specific acoustic ratings.

If you live with dogs, cats or young children, you already know that floors suffer. Claws, toy cars and blocks, accidents and muddy boots can stain a poorly chosen floor faster than you think. The good news: current floor options are built to stand up to real life.

When planning a flooring project, they tend to focus on the colour, style and the price per square foot. Yet what goes under the boards matters just as much. The right underlayment can make a big difference in how the floor feels, noise levels and protection against moisture, and can help your new floor stay beautiful for years.

Long-term durability is another major advantage. Most LVP products feature a protective wear layer that resists scuffs and scratches, stains and discoloration. Homes with dogs and cats appreciate how easy it is to maintain: regular sweeping and a damp mop are all it takes.

The right underlay can also hides slight unevenness beneath the floor and provides some cushioning and warmth. Remember, however, that is not a substitute for TW.8FUn.nEt proper subfloor preparation: big height differences need to be levelled beforehand.

When it comes to wood flooring, two options almost always top the list: laminate flooring and real hardwood. Each of them can look attractive, however they are very different in cost, performance and maintenance.

Can you use wood in these rooms? Some modern laminates can work well in kitchens, if water is cleaned up right away. Wood may also be used in kitchens with caution, however in bathrooms, tile and vinyl remain the better options.

Today’s laminate flooring has come a long way a lot. High-quality laminate products use detailed photographic layers and textured surfaces that feel surprisingly natural. The protective surface makes it resistant to scuffs and scratches, and it is priced less. Several collections even provide water-resistant cores.

Engineered wood is a possibility if you want real wood. Thanks to its cross-ply structure, it resists moisture swings better than solid hardwood, which should generally be avoided on concrete. Use a moisture barrier for long-term performance.

Kitchens and washrooms count as the most demanding spaces in any home. They deal with splashes, steam, dropped dishes and constant cleaning. The floor you install here needs to stay water-resistant, tough and easy to clean while still offering style.

Moisture protection is a second critical role, especially over concrete. Concrete subfloors can release moisture for years, and an underlay with a built-in vapour barrier keeps wood-based floors from damage.

Luxury vinyl plank and tile have quickly become a favourite for both rooms. Fully waterproof constructions guarantee that spills cannot harm your investment if cleaned up promptly. LVP feels more comfortable under bare feet compared to stone, which is a big bonus in the cold season.

Renovating a basement is an excellent way to increase the usable space and comfort to your home. But below-grade spaces come with special challenges: concrete slabs, dampness and chilly surfaces. The wrong floor often causes mildew, warping and expensive replacements.

Can you still have hardwood? Absolutely, though choose wisely. Harder woods like hickory and white oak resist dents better, while wire-brushed textures and textured surfaces camouflage everyday wear much better than a shiny finish.

LVP is widely considered the go-to floor for basements. Most vinyl products are water-resistant, meaning they won’t be damaged when humidity appears. Rigid core vinyl can also hide minor imperfections in the slab.

The number one selling point of luxury vinyl is that many products are waterproof. Compared with solid hardwood, a well-made LVP does not swell or cup when exposed to water. This makes it an ideal option for basements, laundry rooms and entryways.

Laminate is another great option. The protective top layer stays very resistant to scuffs and scratches, sometimes more than other floors. Select laminates with a high abrasion rating plus water-resistant edges for busy homes.

Before choosing a floor, test for moisture in the slab. A simple test such as taping a square of plastic onto the slab for 24 to 48 hours can show any moisture problem. Solve drainage issues prior to installing anything.

Ceramic and porcelain tile stays very water-resistant, but it feels cold unless install in-floor heating. Wall-to-wall carpet, on the other hand, adds comfort yet can absorb humidity, so rugs over a hard floor tend to be a more practical choice.

Vinyl plank flooring is the first recommendation for families. It’s waterproof or highly water-resistant, meaning spilled drinks are easy to clean up. A durable top layer helps prevent scratches, while the cushioned feel feels less noisy than tile.
