From what’s been shown of the story so far, Red Dead Redemption 2 will take place over a decade prior to the events of Red Dead Redemption ; where John Marston’s story chronicled the imminent “end of the Wild West,” Arthur Morgan’s story follows the Van der Linde gang at the height of their notoriety, and is the so-called “beginning of the end” for this volatile period in the American West, according to Rockstar. While playing as Morgan, his role in the game will be to guide the gang through their journey across the West and evading the law on their tail, while also helping the gang set up camp across various locations, and aiding them to gather food and other supplies to maintain morale.
_ Red Dead Redemption 2 _ improves upon the original with its focus on player choices. Whenever Arthur crosses paths with an NPC, players can choose how they want to interact with them: either warmly or antagonistically. Each decision will result in its own outcome, such as a potential shootout if the NPC is antagonized. The outcome will also ultimately have an effect on Arthur’s honor, which directly impacts item discounts and unlockable outfits. A higher rating results in better discounts at stores and unlockable outfits, whereas a low (or even negative) ranking will increase money and item drop rates from dead N
While these relationships definitely had their use in these action-heavy segments of the demo, the interactions that Arthur has with the other members of the gang also play out in more narratively-driven ways. While trekking through the mountains with John and Bill in a later story section that we played, I had the option to talk to Bill along the way to learn more about the rival gang camp that we were about to ambush. Staying silent would have been a completely viable option as well, but having those type of options speaks to the ways that Red Dead Redemption 2 is aiming for a more dynamic and natural way for players to interact with its world and characters.
Now, while I enjoy that Red Dead Redemption 2 has built in so many things that force you to slow down, I think it’s important to note that this probably isn’t something I would want to see from every video game in existence. Trust me, I enjoy how streamlined most other games are now as much as the next guy. But in Red Dead Redemption 2 , I think I’ve started to see early on in my playthrough the larger purpose that Rockstar has with all of these added elements to the game.

Many people felt that if Rockstar Games made a follow-up to Red Dead Redemption, that it would actually be called Red Dead, followed by a different word. Though dual wielding is such an iconic part of Westerns, it’s never been a part of the Red Dead series. The ability to fire two guns simultaneously has to be one of the most electrifying feelings in video games. At the end of the trailer, during the shot of the seven riders, we get a glimpse at one of the rider’s dual wielding pistols. This doesn’t indicate that the player themselves will be able to do this, but the fact that it’s a primary characteristic of a main focus of the trailer does give us hope. It’s not crazy to think that in a game that may have an RPG skill tree, a player could unlock the ability to fire two pistols simultaneously. But unlike many others that I’ve talked to about this, I don’t find myself turned off by any of these aspects of Red Dead Redemption 2 . In fact, I think these elements are Red Dead Redemption 2 ‘ s biggest strength from what I’ve played so far. Rather than just feeling like I’m another bland avatar that is filling a void within this larger Open world games DLC-world, Red Dead Redemption 2 is forcing me to live the actual (fictional) life of Arthur Morgan.
