Rival franchise Call of Duty also did something similar, and has seen phenomenal success with its Modern Warfare reboot. It’s not a one-to-one comparison by any means, but it should at least be encouraging for the Battlefield 2042 skins|https://battlefield2042hq.com/ series. The Call of Duty series also put out a WWII shooter in 2017 that, while not exactly as unpopular as Battlefield 5 has become for fans, also had a particularly middling release even for a Call of Duty title. There were a few problems with microtransactions (a prevalent issue back in 2017 for several games) , the weapon and perk variety in multiplayer, and story gripes as well. Then Call of Duty went back to basics with Modern Warfare , and so far has seen great success, not even counting Warzo
In terms of what was specifically shown, the gameplay from DICE is very ambiguous. It’s clearly an early prototype of gameplay for the next Battlefield game, but the assets themselves don’t appear to be any different from Battlefield 5 . It’s very possible the prototype gameplay shown was a repurposing of assets from Battlefield 5 showcasing what next-gen processing is capable of. That being said, it shows about around a hundred of what appear to be rendered models (all potentially players) moving in a single space. There also was a scene showing a building collapsing, which was more than likely showcasing a new version of Battlefield ‘s Destruction physics. Lastly, there were a few close-ups of an indistinct soldier’s face rendered in high detail, though it wasn’t clear if this was next-gen graphics rendered in-eng
There’s a few options for which setting Battlefield could go next, but the most likely setting is a modern day conflict. A few leaks and rumors on the internet have come out regarding Battlefield 6 , all of which seem to agree the shooter is returning to a contemporary time period. For a series that’s done both historical time periods as well as modern war settings, there’s definitely positive and negative points for a modern setting if true. Battlefield needs a fresh start, and even though the series started with WWII, a modern setting may be the perfect rest
Assuming Battlefield still wants to revisit other pivotal points in history, there is one time period the franchise touched on very briefly. Returning to Vietnam would be perfect for the Battlefield franchise because the combat during the Vietnam War emphasizes what the series has done best. Plus, a vignette-style campaign like in Battlefield 1 but set during the Vietnam War could be incredibly interesting, and considering the many diverse perspectives the player could view the war through would provide a very compelling story. Chaotic firefights in jungles, lush and varied scenery, and paired with destruction Battlefield is known for, a Vietnam time period would evoke serious Bad Company 2 vi
After DICE ended support for Star Wars: Battlefront 2 at around the same time as Battlefield 5 , a majority of their resources can now be spent on the first next-gen game in the standout FPS series. The most anticipated information will be the reveal of the game’s setting. Battlefield 5 saw the series return to its World War II roots, after a string of modern-day releases before the first-time visit of World War I in Battlefield
That being said, returning the Battlefield series to a modern setting doesn’t come without its challenges. Specifically because of the other franchises mentioned above, Call of Duty . Not only would over-saturation of modern shooters be a problem, but the Call of Duty franchise has encroached closer to what used to make Battlefield distinctly different from it. With game modes like Ground War and the Warzone battle royale, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has also tackled big team battle modes to fans’ praise. Ground War in a lot of ways emulates Battlefield ‘s Conquest mode , and has been pretty widely enjoyed by fans as w
That being said, modern combat spawned some of the greatest Battlefield games to date. Battlefield 4 , despite its troublesome launch issues, shaped up to be a great Battlefield game overtime thanks to content updates. Battlefield 3 and Bad Company 2 were some of the best shooters the franchise had to offer because there was a clear focus on what each game intended to do. Bad Company 2 has some of the most intelligent map design in the entire series, justifying the at-the-time revolutionary destruction physics. Battlefield 3 thrived in its variety, showcasing traditional Battlefield gameplay on huge maps like Caspian Border, but also adding more close-quarters combat in maps like Operation Mé
Of course, this brings into question what time period Battlefield 6 could take place in. It’s very possible the series could return to contemporary warfare, similar to many entries before. Or the franchise could pull another Battlefield 1 and pick a time of war that games have rarely portrayed. There’s a few options for Battlefield 6 in terms of a time period or setting, ranging from the most likely to most improba
